A Sámi-language daycare center
A New building for Sámi-speaking children in Inari
The municipality of Inari decided that a new daycare center was needed for Sámi-speaking groups, which had been operating in temporary premises for quite some time. The preferred location was near both the village center and the new school center. The new building houses two Inari Sámi-speaking and two Northern Sámi-speaking groups of children. On the same plot, the yard of a Finnish-language daycare center also needed a makeover, which made it possible to design the surroundings of both daycare centers into a functional whole.
The daycare center building is made of wood, and it was the client’s wish that the material would be seen and felt. The interior walls are clad with thick log panels that exude a soft, natural atmosphere. The vibrant colors – inspired by the Sámi flag – on the doors and windows complement the whole with a sense of fresh playfulness.

Building with elements, but with a human touch
The pressure of a tight schedule made the idea of building by large elements appealing. The technique enabled the construction of earthworks simultaneously with wall and base floor structures, shortening the turnaround time on the site. The prefabricated walls were immediately protected from the weather under the roof built on-site. The goal of pleasant wooden surfaces was achieved conveniently by means of element technology.
