Service home Matriiti
An assisted living facility in an urban environment
The Matriiti service home in Tuira, Oulu, was designed and built based on the winning proposal of a public architectural competition. The service home has 72 apartments for elderly residents, some of which are specifically designed for people with reduced mobility. In addition, the building houses homes for enhanced assisted living.
Matriiti is a state subsidized project and the tenant selection is made in accordance with the state's criteria: "The selection of tenants is based on social expediency and financial need, which are assessed on the basis of the applicant's housing needs, wealth and income."

Care and housing
The building mass of the assisted living facility consists of a low and a high part. The high-rise section has 62 apartments, and it connects the building to the surrounding residential milieu. The 10 apartments in the lower part are suitable for residents with mobility restrictions. Two of the apartments have homes for residents in need of special support. The low-rise part of the building will connect the service home to the boulevard-like streetscape of Tuira and complement the pleasant atmosphere created by the residential buildings along the street.

A convincing design from the point of view of the cityscape, it reinterprets in a fresh way the construction traditions that have been formed in the Tuira district over the decades - Assessment record of the competition entries
