Vaala School Center

A comprehensive school in the landscapes of Kainuu

Vaala Comprehensive School is located in the heart of a municipal center surrounded by nature. The four parts of the building form the basic functional solution of the interior and divide the plot into smaller units. Grades 1-9 study at the school. The building also houses facilities for early childhood education.

Vaala Comprehensive School provides basic education for grades 1–9.

Tar and wood

The school consists of four wooden blocks, between which the lobby and canteen area serve as the center of the building. Vaala is a historically important hub for pine tar production and transport along the Oulujoki River, so pine tar from Kainuu was naturally chosen for the treatment of the wooden cladding of the facades. Colorful metal plates bring life and movement to the dark building masses. Despite the project's tight cost framework, we created sustainable and experiential architecture for the enjoyment of all municipal residents within.
