A holiday home design that respects the environment

Supplementing the delicate natural surroundings of a summer cottage plot with a new winter-proof building can easily result in a solution that fits its surroundings poorly – if at all. Operating simultaneously as the client, the contractor and the designer means there’s a lot to be considered. The building was not to dominate the landscape viewed from the lake, nor was it possible, within reason, to expand or alter the 70s buildings on the plot. Yet the plan was to use what was the best about the plot, such as the natural landscape.

A modern cabin on a hill

In the end, the simple residential building was placed further away from the shoreline, on a more elevated part of the plot. The view from the top of the hill opened over the other buildings and on Lake Oulujärvi yet the new building rising from the forest floor remains hidden in the shade of the trees. The polished natural concrete floor echoes the cliff surface in the vicinity. The traditional pine tar treatment of the facades recounts local history and serves as an incomparable tree preservative.
